Raquel Russell

I’m a multimedia storyteller with experience as a writer, communications professional, journalist, content creator and podcaster. A first-generation Canadian of Jamaican descent, my life and work is shaped by my love for storytelling, interest in the impacts of religion and societal systems, and my desire to pursue fulfilling experiences.

Since 2013, I have had the privilege to be part of storytelling in diverse industries. I worked out my journalistic skill set through my joint journalism degree program, where I was able to produce multimedia storytelling for our local East Toronto community. After this experience, I made the jump to higher education communication, where I work for the University of Toronto (U of T), Canada’s top university, creating timely social media content, writing news articles and keeping up-to-date on the latest trends. To make sure my communications experience wasn’t limited to the Ivory tower, I had the privilege of serving as the social media manager for Canadian gospel music gem the Toronto Mass Choir for several years, creating digital content that told the story of the choir.

I’m proud that my investigation into how the University of Toronto continues to respond to anti-Black racism in the institution was featured in the U of T Magazine (read by more than 375,000 of the university’s alumni and friends around the world). My work has also been featured on Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) channels. I have been a speaker at industry panels and student classrooms, speaking about my experience as a former journalism student, communications professional and social media manager.

I am also the creator and host of the podcast Talking Stories with Raquel Russell, where we talk about stories that impact lives and inspire change.

In my world, education is key to more opportunities. After graduating from the U of T Scarborough journalism program, I completed a certificate in Digital Strategy & Communications Management, and my next goal is to finish a master’s degree through part-time studies.

My work and aspirations have taught me to always dig deeper when helping to tell your story – and that’s what I’m most passionate about: the love of storytelling and helping to ensure your story – your vision – is communicated well.

Some of my favourite travel spots include NYC, the U.K. and Jamaica. I bring my whole #BlackGirlNerd energy and positivity to projects in the interest of making a safe space for everyone.

When I’m not working on research or communications projects, you’ll find me catching up on my favourite television shows and books, lurking on fandom (online fan communities) drama, or fitting in a dance workout.
