Khwahish Khan

My Once Upon A Time started at the age of 13 with a pen and my diary. I physically wrote the first draft of a story, critiqued it, tore each page and began all over again. That was my first experience as both a writer and editor. At 16, with the unconditional support of my parents, I self-published that story and called it An Identity.

Since then, my words have found a home on numerous platforms such as Assembly by Malala Fund, ED Times, GirlUp Sky and Reclamation Magazine. A notable moment in my journey was working with Malala Yousafzai’s team on a social media campaign and being recognized for my work by Malala herself on Instagram. In 2021, I also had the privilege of delivering a TEDx talk on the glamorisation of toxic masculinity in young adult novels – an experience that taught me the impact of powerful storytelling.

My academic pathway was guided by my passion for literature. In 2023, I graduated with a B.A. (Honours) in Liberal Arts with a specialization in Literature. In the course of my degree, I authored a dissertation on identity politics in Turkish Literature which was later chosen for publication. The rigorous editing regime that I had to follow in the process of it, made me certain that editing was the field I wanted to be a part of. So I enrolled myself in a postgraduate diploma in Professional Writing and Communications. Here I honed what my peers would call a kind approach to editing. “She’ll tell you what’s wrong with your narrative, but she’ll also tell you why,” is what a classmate once told the cohort. This, I consider my greatest strength.

I’ve always dreamed big and my philosophy is simple. We don’t know what the future holds for us, but with one foot on the ground and our head in clouds, we can work towards what may be considered impossible.

Apart from the comments on the side of a Word document, you can find my name against online projects like my poetry series on Spotify and my book reviews on Fable.
