Melissa Murphy
I am a Montréal-based developmental editor, ghostwriter, and freelance journalist who cares about the craft of storytelling. Of proud Trinidadian heritage, I first fell in love with the written word through the richness and vibrancy found in Caribbean folklore.
With a background in English Literature and Professional Writing, I began my professional writing career in 2017. My passion for world and word-building has contributed to the lending of my pen to publications that aim to highlight prevalent Black voices, including the Montréal Community Contact—Montréal’s only newspaper that caters to its Black and Caribbean demographic—as well as Sisi Magazine, an online space for Black female voices, as a Senior Contributing Editor. My strength in creating compelling biographical pieces and interview articles has allowed me to magnify local heroes and etch their stories into history.
I understand the importance of telling your story, in your own way and on your own terms, to transcend time and borders. Steeped in a true love for developmental editing, I work closely with authors to identify, curate, and refine their voice. I am keenly aware of the power of the writer-editor relationship and work tirelessly to center the voices that have historically been pushed to the margins.
I am currently the Senior Editor at WritersBlok, a premiere Black-owned and led ghostwriting agency that caters to celebrities and high profile figures and organizations.
My latest feat, Mosaic Island Consulting, founded in 2020, is a brand development and literary consulting agency, which seeks to give Black women an even playing field to tell their stories in an honest, and authentic way.
