Sara Hussein

I have always been a writer, far before I ever chose it as my job. I was a devastatingly quiet girl who was too shy to speak up, preferring to shrink myself in silence. But writing was my outlet. Putting pen to paper was how I discovered that I had a voice and I had something to say. I often tell people that writing is the only thing I know how to do, but perhaps the more accurate truth is that writing is the only thing that makes me feel like myself.

My career has evolved a little differently from what I imagined it would be as a kid, but I’ve been lucky enough to wear many different hats as a writer and to flex my muscles in different mediums and industries. It’s helped round me out and expand my capabilities and confidence. It’s also challenged me in the absolute best way, forcing me out of my comfort zone into a world of endless possibilities.

In 2014, I received a BA in political science, with a focus on Middle Eastern and African studies. My studies, and my passion for history and politics, drew me towards journalism. In 2019, I received my Master of Journalism from Toronto Metropolitan University. While in the program, I completed my thesis on the topic of solitary confinement in Ontario prisons, a topic that has since become one of my deepest passions. Since then, I have worked in journalism, media, entertainment and most recently, as a ghostwriter. I am also working on my first novel, a tale about family, memory, trauma and forgiveness.
